Ep 42: Common Challenges in the Early Days Post Bariatric Surgery

If you're experiencing something in your early days after bariatric surgery and wondering "is this normal?" — this episode is for you. The goal here is normalisation. These challenges are common, they are expected, and you are not alone.
Low Appetite and Thirst
One of the metabolic effects of bariatric surgery is a significant drop in appetite and thirst. While this feels like relief after years of constant hunger, it's actually a challenge in those early weeks — because you still need to build up your protein and fluid intake, even when your body isn't driving you to eat or drink.
Nausea
Very common in the first days and weeks. Most people go home with anti-nausea medication for a reason. For most it resolves quickly, but some people experience it for longer — and if that's you, please reach out to your bariatric centre rather than pushing through alone.
Taste Changes
Foods you loved before surgery may taste completely different — or foods you never liked may suddenly appeal. This is normal and often temporary. Be open to experimenting, and don't write foods off forever.
Food Intolerances
Certain foods — especially drier or tougher proteins — may not settle well in the early months. Eggs are a classic example. This usually improves over time, so park it to the side and come back to it later.
Lactose Sensitivity
A temporary reduction in lactose tolerance is common, especially after bypass procedures. It generally improves by around six months. In the meantime, hard cheeses and some yoghurts are usually better tolerated than milk.
Grieving Food and the Experience of Eating
Food plays a huge emotional and social role in most people's lives. When that changes so dramatically after surgery, there can be real grief — even alongside the joy of weight loss. This is normal and deserves acknowledgment.
Remembering Vitamins and Medications
If you've never had to take daily supplements before, building this habit takes time. Tying your vitamins to your eating schedule is one of the most effective strategies.
