Ep 45: What They Don't Tell You About WLS

A reel I posted on Instagram about this topic got more response than almost anything else I'd shared. It touched a nerve — because these are the things people often only discover after surgery, when they wish someone had told them sooner. Here are four of them.

1. Weight Maintenance Can Be the Hardest Part

In the weight loss phase, you have constant feedback — the scales moving, clothes fitting differently, people commenting. That feedback drives motivation. When you reach maintenance and the scales stop moving, that external driver disappears. Maintenance requires a different mindset and different tools. It also requires awareness that your metabolic rate has dropped after significant weight loss, meaning even small increases in energy intake can lead to gradual regain over time.

2. The Fear of Weight Regain Is Real

Many people describe this fear as terrifying — and it makes sense given everything they've invested in their journey. This fear is not irrational. But it shouldn't leave you feeling isolated or out of control. It's a signal that you need tools, confidence, and support — not shame.

3. It Can Feel Very Isolating

Food is central to socialising, celebrating, and connecting with people. When your relationship with food changes so significantly, it can feel very lonely — especially when the people around you don't fully understand what you're going through. Finding community, whether online or in person, matters.

4. Surgery Does Not Automatically Improve Your Relationship With Food

In the early months when appetite is low, it can feel like your emotional eating has disappeared. It hasn't — it's just quiet. As your appetite returns and life gets busy again, old patterns often resurface. This is the deeper, longer-term work — and it's absolutely worth doing. Your relationship with food can improve significantly after surgery, but it takes time, self-awareness, and usually some support.
