Ep 81: Client Story | Lisa Shares Her Gastric Bypass Journey and Life at 60

This post is a companion to Episode 81 of the Bariatric Nutrition Coach Podcast. Listen to the full episode on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

In this episode I was joined by Lisa — a nurse from Rhode Island who is 60 years young, had a gastric bypass in May 2024, and has since lost around 130 pounds. Lisa describes herself as having been on a bariatric weight loss journey for nearly her whole life — culminating in surgery. Her story is one of the most powerful conversations I have had on this podcast.

From Doubter to Believer

Lisa was one of those people who thought bariatric surgery was a very drastic measure — and for a long time could not understand why anyone would do it. But as her struggles with weight continued and her body began fighting against her — shortness of breath walking into work, zero activity tolerance on a cardiac stress test — she realised she was trapped. She could not lose weight to become more active, and could not become more active without losing weight. Surgery broke that cycle.

The Emotional Journey

We spent a lot of time in this conversation talking about the emotional and mindset side of Lisa's journey — because she herself identifies it as the most significant part. Working through emotional eating, understanding the relationship between comfort and food, and developing genuine self-compassion has been as important as any nutritional change. As a nurse, Lisa understood the physiology from day one. But the psychology — that took time, support, and courage.

Life at 60

Lisa is a beautiful example that bariatric surgery is not just for a certain age or a certain point in life. At 60, she is building habits she never had before, improving her health outcomes dramatically, and approaching the journey with the wisdom that comes from decades of lived experience. She is down 130 pounds and nowhere near done with what is possible.

Her Message

It is never too late. At 60, at 65, at any age — you deserve a life that is full and active and joyful. Surgery is not the easy way out. But with the right support, it can be the turning point that changes everything.
