Ep 28: Client Spotlight | Katina's Bariatric Journey at 10 Weeks Post Surgery
This post is a companion to Episode 28 of the Bariatric Nutrition Coach Podcast. Listen to the full episode on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
In this episode I was joined by Katina — a mum of three who is just 10 weeks post gastric sleeve surgery — for an honest and inspiring conversation about the early days.
Why Katina Had Surgery
Katina watched her husband go through the same procedure a year earlier and lose 50 kilos. Exhausted, unable to keep up with her children, and feeling like she had lost herself after her third baby, she decided it was time. She used some savings and made the call: "I am investing in my life."
The Early Days
Katina's biggest adjustment has been timing — knowing when to eat, when to drink, making sure her needs do not come last. As a mum of three, she put it beautifully: "In order for my kids to come first, I have to do this right." Her eating schedule, her protein, her fluid — all of it feeds into having the energy and presence to be the mum she wants to be.
She also noted something many people do not expect: she thinks about food more after surgery, not less. But it is different thinking — not cravings and deprivation, but intentional planning around what will nourish and fuel her body.
What Has Made the Difference
Katina is open about the fact that the guidance she received from her surgeon's team was very basic. Finding personalised support — someone who helped her build structure, understand protein, and make food work for her lifestyle — has been the key to her early success. She is already down 21 kilos in 10 weeks.
Her Advice
Do it. And while you are at it, get a bariatric dietitian on board from the beginning. The investment in yourself pays dividends for the rest of your life.
