Ep 29: WLS Nutrition | Is Grazing Your Downfall After Bariatric Surgery?

Grazing and snacking after bariatric surgery is one of the most common challenges I work on with clients — and one of the habits most associated with slowed weight loss and weight regain. In this episode I unpack what grazing actually looks like, why it happens, and what to do about it.

How Grazing Starts

In the early days it can look like eating a little bit of a meal and then picking at it again an hour later — taking so long over a meal that it essentially becomes a grazing episode. Over time, it develops as protein intake drops, carbohydrate foods creep up, and the structure of regular meals starts to break down. The cycle is self-reinforcing: graze before a meal, do not eat much at the meal, feel like you need something soon after, graze again.

A Real Client Example

Sally came to me two years post-surgery with weight regain. In our observation period we found she was having around eight eating occasions per day — not intentional, structured ones but ad hoc grazing. Her protein was inadequate and her eating schedule was completely irregular. We established a regular eating schedule with reminders, built good protein into the early part of her day, and within weeks she reported no longer feeling the need to snack later in the day. It is not magic — it is feeding your body well.

Two Parts to Address

When I work on grazing with clients there are always two parts. The first is physical — making sure you are eating regularly and getting adequate protein so you are not genuinely hungry. The second is emotional — identifying whether you are grazing out of boredom, stress, habit, or to numb out, and developing strategies for those moments that do not involve food.

When the urge hits, pause and ask: am I physically hungry? If yes, have a planned, high-protein snack. If not, ask: what am I actually hungry for? Write it down. That awareness is the first step to change.
