Ep 30: Client Spotlight | Aimee Shares Her Bariatric Journey at 2 Years Post Surgery
This post is a companion to Episode 30 of the Bariatric Nutrition Coach Podcast. Listen to the full episode on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
In this episode I caught up with Aimee from Christchurch, New Zealand — more than a year after we worked together. Aimee's journey was not a smooth one, and she is now training for a marathon.
A Rocky Start
Aimee's early journey was complicated when she was sent home during a national lockdown and given a prescription she should not have had — anti-inflammatories, which are contraindicated for bariatric patients. By the six-month mark she was exhausted, losing hair, her nails had split, and her weight loss had stopped. She found my Facebook page and reached out.
Breaking the Dieting Mindset
What Aimee recognised when we worked together was that she had been bringing a strong dieting mindset into her post-surgery journey — restricting, not feeding herself adequately, and her body screaming at her with cravings as a result. Letting go of restriction and genuinely nourishing herself was the turning point. Her hair grew back, her energy became extraordinary, and her mental health is the best it has ever been.
When Weight Crept Back
Aimee was honest about a period where she became comfortable and gained some weight. She went back to basics: her coaching notes, the podcast, protein first. It came off. This is the real story of bariatric surgery — not a straight line, but a journey with tools to return to.
Her Advice
One thing at a time. You do not have to change everything overnight. Just one small thing each day will get you where you need to be.
