Ep 53: Mindset Derailers Post Bariatric Surgery
This post is a companion to Episode 53 of the Bariatric Nutrition Coach Podcast. Listen to the full episode on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
In this episode I share eight common thoughts that can derail people after bariatric surgery — and the alternative way of thinking about each one. As you read through, notice which ones you recognise in yourself.
- "The less I eat, the better." → Replace with: I need adequate protein, calories, and carbohydrates every day to fuel my weight loss and feel good.
- "I can never eat [favourite food] again." → Replace with: My journey is long. Balance and variety are the goal. That food isn't off the table forever — it just needs to be intentional.
- "I have to track calories every day or I'll lose control." → Replace with: When I prioritise protein and follow my eating habits, things fall into place. I can track periodically to check in rather than daily as a rule.
- "My hunger and cravings are back — I'm going to fail." → Replace with: This is normal and expected. The tool of surgery was always going to ease over time. I have strategies for this.
- "I'm too busy to eat regularly." → Replace with: No matter what my day looks like, I can prepare and have things on hand. Eating regularly is self-care, not a diet rule.
- "I overindulged this weekend. I'm a failure. I need to restrict now." → Replace with: This happens. I'm human. I'll go back to my two key habits and move forward — no punishment needed.
- "The scales went up slightly and I'm panicking." → Replace with: Normal fluctuations happen. I know what my threshold is for taking action, and a small movement isn't it.
- "The only way to get more protein is to eat more meat and cheese." → Replace with: There are so many ways to build protein into my diet. I want to keep learning and expanding my options.
