Ep 54: Why I Teach the Protein Bites Ratio

The protein bites ratio is one of my most-used tools. It's simple, it's portable, and it works. Here's what it is and why I teach it.

What Is the Protein Bites Ratio?

For the first year after surgery: three bites of lean protein to one bite of "other" (whole grains, vegetables, fruit). After one year, when you can comfortably eat adequate protein: two bites of protein to one bite of other.

You plate your food in roughly these proportions — protein filling most of the plate, a smaller amount of other foods alongside — and then eat slowly in those ratios. No weighing required.

Why I Moved Away from Prescribing Volumes

Early in my career I used to tell clients to eat a specific amount — quarter cup of this, half cup of that. What I found was that people would force food down past their comfort level to reach the target. They'd eat over an hour, or graze through a meal. Neither of those outcomes is what we want.

The protein bites ratio respects individual variation — some days you can eat more, some days less — while keeping protein consistently prioritised. It also teaches people to listen to their body and stop when satisfied, rather than eating to a prescribed volume.

Why It Works

When clients start eating this way, their protein intake goes up, their volume naturally becomes appropriate, and they're less hungry later in the day. It works at restaurants, at celebrations, at friends' places — anywhere. You don't need your scales. You just need to plate up with intention and eat slowly.
