Hair loss after bariatric surgery is one of the most common questions and concerns I receive. Let me answer the most important questions directly.
Is It Normal?
Yes. Hair loss after bariatric surgery is very normal and expected. It varies significantly between individuals — some barely notice it, others find it quite confronting. Women with fine or dark hair tend to notice it more.
Why Does It Happen?
The main driver is the stress of significant rapid weight loss on your body. Your body interprets this as a signal of scarcity and moves more hair follicles into the dormant (shedding) phase. Hormonal changes — similar to those experienced in pregnancy — may also play a role.
When Does It Happen?
Typically between three and seven months after surgery, roughly in line with when weight loss is most rapid. You'll know it's tapering off when you start seeing tiny new hairs growing in — especially around your hairline.
When Should You Be Worried?
If hair loss hasn't slowed by around the twelve-month mark, or if it stops and then starts again later, it's worth investigating further. Check in with your bariatric centre or GP to ensure there are no nutritional deficiencies (especially iron, B12, or zinc) and that hormones are being considered.
What Can You Do to Stop It?
Honestly, nothing has been shown to stop this particular phase of hair loss — it's a physiological response to the surgery and weight loss. What you can do is make sure you're taking a good bariatric multivitamin (which contains zinc), getting adequate protein, and staying hydrated. These support overall hair health. Spending money on specialist shampoos and hair supplements is generally not supported by evidence.
The good news: it grows back. And not a single client has ever told me they wished they hadn't had surgery because of the hair loss.
