Ep 69: Relying Too Much on Protein Shakes After Bariatric Surgery

Protein shakes are a genuinely valuable tool after bariatric surgery — but there comes a point where relying on them too heavily can actually hold you back. In this episode I cover both sides: why shakes are so useful early on, and what can stop people from progressing beyond them.

Why Protein Shakes Are So Useful Early On

In the early days after surgery, eating enough protein through food alone is very difficult. Restriction is high, appetite is low, and nausea can make solid food unappealing. Protein shakes allow you to reach your protein goals more easily when eating them simply is not possible. They contribute to fluid intake. They are convenient when sitting down for a structured meal is not an option. They are a wonderful bridge — strategic and purposeful.

When Reliance Becomes a Problem

The goal of bariatric surgery is to progress to a full, varied, balanced diet. Protein shakes are a stepping stone — not a destination. Over time, as restriction eases and food becomes more tolerable, the aim is to get your protein increasingly from whole food sources. People who stay heavily reliant on shakes often do so because they are nervous about food not settling, because shakes feel safe and easy, or because they never received guidance on how to progress their diet.

How to Start Transitioning

Work towards replacing one shake at a time with a high-protein meal or snack. Start with the shake you find easiest to replace — perhaps the one you enjoy least, or the one at a mealtime when eating feels most manageable. Build up gradually. And track your protein for a few days to make sure your intake stays consistent through the transition. If food still does not feel like it is settling well, please check in with your bariatric centre or dietitian — there may be something worth investigating.
