Ep 73: Client Spotlight | How Alison Lost 40lbs 4 Years Post VSG

This post is a companion to Episode 73 of the Bariatric Nutrition Coach Podcast. Listen to the full episode on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

In this episode I was joined by Alison — who had her gastric sleeve in February 2018, lost significant weight, regained all of it, and then lost 40 pounds in the eight months we worked together. Her story is one of the most powerful examples of what is possible, even years after surgery.

The Honeymoon Period — and What Came After

Alison's early days after surgery were wonderful. She started boxing before the operation and loved it for the first time in her life. She was never hungry. The weight fell off effortlessly. Then life happened — she stopped boxing, went through some difficult times, and the weight slowly crept back. By the time COVID hit, she had regained about 50 pounds. And when the world opened back up, the weight continued to climb until she was back to her pre-surgery weight.

The Turning Point

Alison describes reaching a place where she just stopped caring — food was comfort, but it also made her feel terrible. She would eat to feel better, gain weight, feel worse, and the cycle continued. Until the day she said "enough." She found me, reached out, and decided to try again — this time with tools and support she never had before.

This Time Was Different

Alison lost 40 pounds in eight months — more slowly than after her original surgery, but sustainably. She now has techniques and strategies she never had the first time around. She understands why she eats the way she does, what drives her emotional eating, and how to come back when life pushes her off track. She describes the knowledge as something she has for life now — and that is the real win.

Her Message

It is never too late. Whether you are two years or seven years post-surgery, whether you have regained everything or just some — it is not over. The tool still works. With the right support, change is absolutely possible.
