Ep 74: What Is the Key for Bariatric Success?

What is the key to bariatric success? After working with over 1,700 people across my career, I want to share five qualities I consistently observe in the clients who get the best results — not just in the short term, but for life.

1. They Truly Know Surgery Is Just a Tool

Not just in their head — in their heart. There is a big difference between intellectually understanding that surgery is a tool and truly accepting it. The clients who do best go into their journey knowing that significant, ongoing behaviour change will be required — and they are at peace with that. They are not hoping surgery will fix everything. They are ready to do the work.

2. They Set Their Own Goals

Their goals are specific and personal — not a number their surgeon mentioned or a weight they were at age 21. Their why is deeply their own: to play with their grandchildren, to come off medications, to travel comfortably. When their goals are personal, they stay motivated even when the external feedback fades.

3. They Focus on Behaviour Change, Not Just Weight Loss

The clients who do best understand that the habits they build are what deliver and keep the results. They focus on eating regularly, prioritising protein, moving their bodies, eating slowly — and they know that when they practise these behaviours consistently, the weight takes care of itself.

4. They Access Support Proactively

They do not wait until things are bad. They reach out when things are just starting to go off track. They treat their bariatric support team as an ongoing resource, not an emergency service. This early intervention makes everything easier to address.

5. They Approach the Journey with Self-Compassion

They expect setbacks. They do not treat imperfection as failure. When they drift off track, they reflect, adjust, and come back — without shame, without extreme restriction, without drama. They are in a long game, and they know it.
