Ep 75: Client Spotlight | Kathryn Shares Her Bariatric Journey at 8 Months Post-Surgery

This post is a companion to Episode 75 of the Bariatric Nutrition Coach Podcast. Listen to the full episode on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

In this episode I was joined by Kathryn — a technology professional, mother of three adult sons, and grandmother-to-be — who started working with me just before her bariatric surgery and is now eight months post-op. Her journey is thoughtful, methodical, and deeply inspiring.

Why Kathryn Had Surgery

Kathryn had struggled with her weight for around 30 years. While her health had been manageable, she was becoming increasingly aware that her quality of life and "health span" — her years of healthy, active living — would be impacted if she did not act. Despite years of dieting programs and the weight always returning, she decided to take the leap. Her goal, beautifully put: to be "fit, flexible and fabulous."

Setting Herself Up From the Beginning

One of the things that stands out about Kathryn is how intentionally she approached her journey. She reached out to me before surgery — a couple of weeks before her procedure — wanting to set herself up from day one. She started working with me during her pre-op diet and has brought that same methodical, committed energy to every stage since.

What Eight Months Looks Like

Kathryn is eight months in and thriving. She has built a regular eating structure that fits her busy life, understands how to prioritise protein, and has learned to listen to her body in a way she never did before. She describes the understanding she now has — of why to eat a certain way, not just what to eat — as transformative.

Her Advice

Get support from the very beginning. Do not wait until you are struggling. The investment you make in understanding your journey before and immediately after surgery is the foundation everything else is built on.
